Research from The AA has shown that the proportion of electric vehicles (EVs) running out of charge in the UK has fallen to a record low in 2024:
- 2024
1.85% of EV breakdowns were due to running out of charge, down from 2.26% in 2023 - 2023
4% of EV breakdowns were due to running out of charge, down from 8% four years ago
This is due to a number of factors, including:
- Improved range
Newer EVs have longer ranges, with most able to travel at least 250 miles - Better charging infrastructure
The public charging network is more reliable and growing, and there are more domestic and workplace chargers - Better driver education
Drivers are better informed and receive more help on when, where, and how to charge - New battery technology
New battery technologies offer higher energy densities, faster charging times, and longer lifespans
The AA expects the proportion of EVs running out of charge to drop to 1%, which is roughly the same as the proportion of ICE cars running out of petrol or diesel.
