Could EV's really save you £0000s?
We have recently seen a noticeable increase in drivers and businesses asking about electric vehicles, with rising petrol and diesel prices being one of the main reasons.
The headline savings are compelling.
We’ve based the below on a BMW X3 which travels 10,000 miles per annum over 4 years.
Fuel Cost:
EV Charging *£2,285
Diesel £7,556
Petrol £7,838
* EV charging based on average home or workplace rates. Off-peak home charging could reduce the EV cost further, to as little as £725.
That’s a potential saving of between £5,271 and £7,113
This is only part of the decision. Business users may also benefit from:
- Favourable company car tax treatment
- Lower servicing and maintenance requirements
- Reduced emissions
- A quieter and more refined driving experience
- Support for corporate sustainability goals
OVL has been supplying EVs for over 10 years, and we use electric vehicles within our own business. We therefore understand the practical concerns drivers may have, including range, charging availability, home charging and longer journeys.
Most importantly, our advice is impartial. We recognise that electric will not suit every driver, and we would never recommend an EV simply because it is electric.
Modern Plug-in Hybrids can offer an alternative in some cases and have improved dramatically. Where early models typically offered 15-30 miles of electric driving, many of today's PHEVs can achieve 50-90 miles on battery power alone.
Martin Wedge from OVL wasn't quite ready to make the jump to a fully electric vehicle, and that's perfectly understandable. While an EV would comfortably cover most of his day-to-day local driving, Martin's hobbies regularly take him on long-distance journeys across Europe, often towing a heavy trailer.
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) gives Martin the best of both worlds. For everyday driving, he enjoys the low running costs and electric-only convenience that an EV offers. When it's time for those longer adventures, the petrol engine provides extra flexibility and peace of mind, removing concerns about charging stops when towing or travelling long distances.
For drivers whose routine journeys are largely local but who occasionally need to travel further afield, a modern PHEV can be an excellent compromise.
We can analyse your fleet on a driver-by-driver basis, looking at annual mileage, regular journeys, vehicle requirements and charging access. This allows us to identify where an EV could deliver genuine benefits and where a petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicle may remain the better option.
